History
Skateboards began to be sold around 1960, but homemade ones were made in the early 1900s out of roller skate wheels and wooden boards. Skateboarding used to be known as “sidewalk surfing” and was made to target surfers when there weren’t any good waves. The first shop to sell skateboards was Val Surf in 1962. Makaha made the first professional skateboard team in 1963, and the first competition was also in 1963.
